PC12 cells are embryologically, histologically, and biochemically equivalent to adrenal chromaffin cells. In addition, since the isolation of PC12 cells in the 1970s, these cells have served as a highly regarded model of sympathetic neuron differentiation. When treated with nanogram quantities of nerve growth factor, the cells can survive in the absence of serum, exit the cell cycle, and extend long branched neurites similar to the axon and dendrites of autonomic sympathetic neurons.

  • Pheochromocytoma: Adrenal chromaffin cell tumor
  • Nerve Growth Factor The first neurotrophin ever discovered is capable of activating specific cell surface receptors on sympathetic neurons to stimulate cell survival and differentiation
